Reservation Codru is the oldest natural scientific reservation that is guarded by the government. It was founded in 1971 and is situated in 60 km of Chisinau not far from Losovo commune.
The reservation consists out of three functional zones: strictly defended zone (area in 720 hectare), buffer zone (4357 hectare) and transitional zone (2 km around the buffer zone).
The nature of Codru is rich in variety of flora (about a thousand of plant species) and fauna (52 species of mammals, 8 species of reptiles, 10 species of amphibious, 151 species of birds and more than 8 thousands of insects). 10 species of birds that live on this territory are noted down in Red Book of Moldova. In the reservation there is a constant work at saving and increasing the number of disappearing species of flora and fauna.
On the territory of reservation “The Nature Museum” is open. In this museum the stuffed figures of almost all species of animals, reptiles, birds, butterflies and bugs that live in Moldova are represented. The other point of interest about this reservation is flooded areas.
